PCEA Tumutumu Hospital is one of the four general hospitals in Nyeri County. It was started as a Clinic in 1909 by Rev. Henry Scott, from Scotland. Currently it has a registered bed capacity of 203 patients. In 1914, the first permanent building was built, followed by another in 1925.
The old maternity was built in 1929 and another block in 1930. This was followed by the outpatient building in 1993, the Mount Kenya Ward in 1998 and the Maria Zack ward in 2003. It offers internships for Clinical Officers, Laboratory Technologists, Pharmaceutical Technologists, Medical Records Officers, Accountants, Medical Officers and electives for Medical Students.
The Training College was started in 1929 and currently trains Community Health Nurses at Diploma level with 225 in session. In 2015, an ultra modern College building was built to enable an increase in the number of students and courses. Collaboration is underway with the Presbyterian University of East Africa for the inception of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. The College offers Teaching practice for Degree Nurses.
In 2004 the Guest House and the Comprehensive Care Centre were started. All these developments have been made possible through generous donations from partners in Kenya, Scotland and USA.
The Hospital has been a centre of excellence for the treatment of many ailments, serving over 20,000 patients per year. A number of procedures are performed every year including reconstructive surgery, orthopedic surgery, urology, eye and renal. There has been continued collaboration with the government at the National and County level, for the common good of the patients. Interventions have been made by the Hospital in the control of HIV/ AIDS since the 1990s.
