HERON is a Group of companies active in the generation, supply and trading of Electricity, as well as in the supply and trading of Natural Gas in Greece.
Having started its operations in 2000, it is now supported by three large energy Groups, which are:
- the GEK TERNA Group, the leader in Energy Production from conventional and renewable (RES) sources in Greece, who founded HERON
- ENGIE, the largest Independent Power Producer in the world, acquired 50% of HERON’s shares in 2009.
- QATAR PETROLEUM (through QPI GAS & POWER OPC.), yet another global leader in the energy sector, successfully acquired a 25% holding in the share capital of the HERON II power plant in March 2014.

HERON was the first private Group to operate in the Greek liberalized electricity market, as well as the first Private Group to operate in the Natural Gas market in Greece.

HERON constructed and has successfully been operating the first private Natural Gas fired power plant in Greece since 2004 (HERON I). Since 2009, HERON also operates a combined cycle thermoelectric power plant in Thiva (HERON II), reaching a total installed capacity of 582 MW.
HERON participates substantially in the National Energy Planning and Programming by using state-of-the-art technology and operating in line with market needs. HERON today is the largest Independent Electricity Supplier in Greece. Thanks to its strong shareholding and production basis, the Group is able to ensure significant and long-term benefits to its customers and partners.

HERON’s vision is a world where green energy belongs to everyone!
For this reason, HERON looks forward and implements actions. Energy is the mainstay of the future, lying ahead of us full of new perspectives and possibilities. All of this is accomplished through conscious choices and actions that support sustainable development.
